Varsity Football Team Wins Second Straight Section Championship
For the second straight season - - and the tenth time in program history - - the Whitesboro Varsity Football team is the Section III Class A champion.
Now, the team is trying to go at least one round further compared to last year.
Whitesboro defeated Indian River 17-7 in the Section III Class A final on November 5 at the Carrier Dome, in Syracuse. The win marked the second time Whitesboro beat Indian River this season.
However, unlike the first meeting - - which Whitesboro dominated on the ground - - Whitesboro took to the air to beat Indian River this time around.
Whitesboro struck first early in the first quarter when senior quarterback Donte Filletti connected with senior wide receiver Pat Galer for a 61-yard touchdown pass. Kicker, Gary Casab, made it 10-0 at halftime after booting a 22-yard field goal in the second quarter.
Whitesboro took a 17-0 lead with 2:28 left in the third quarter when Galer caught another touchdown pass from Filletti - - this one a 27-yarder. A 79-yard run by Kwazsi Gaddis of Indian River with 1:43 left in the third quarter made it 17-7, but Indian River never threatened to score the rest of the game. Galer finished with four catches for 140 yards for Whitesboro and was named the game MVP.
With the win, Whitesboro, 10-0 and ranked No. 3 in the state, advances to play Section IV champion Union-Endicott (6-4) in a Class A regional final. The game is taking place on Friday, November 11, at Cicero-North Syracuse High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Union-Endicott claimed its 12th Section IV title with a 16-12 win over Vestal.
